score analysis

Pieces is my favorite guilty pleasure horror film from the 1980s. It's a crazily stupid and exploitative splatter fest that I've watched at least 50 times and each time it never fails to entertain and bewilder simultaneously.

After a bit of consideration it's clear that the film shares a lot of traits with the Giallo format and the Spanish-American collaboration and gives the film just enough international flavor that it fits right in with most of the exploitative Gialli from the 70s and 80s.

So just how Giallo is Pieces?

According to the GialloScore, quite Giallo indeed actually. Once we've deducted the 23 standard points that most Gialli receive for simply being at the right place at the right time, Pieces racks up 61 out of 77 points (almost 80% of the remaining points available).

When stripped of all its trashy flair, Pieces is a pretty classic murder mystery with suspects and clues and even an amateur detective trying to help the police catch the killer. Despite a few red herrings the mystery isn't very complicated and unlike most Gialli, the killer is pretty much revealed to the audience before the rest of the characters figure it out. And while the unmasking and capture of the killer is ushered in with little fanfare, the preposterous surprise ending more than makes up for this.

For fans of trashy Giallo, Pieces is a perfect evolution of the genre within the gore soaked slasher world of the 1980s. It should be a staple in the library of any self-respecting horror movie fan (as long as you're not too serious about it!)
